Kite Flying
The Wright Brothers tested their ideas about flight at Kill Devil Hills, just south of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Wilbur wrote to his father, Milton, to explain his reasons for choosing the area: “At Kitty Hawk, which is on the narrow bar separating the Sound from the Ocean, there are neither hills nor trees, so that it offers a safe place for practice. Also, the wind there is stronger than any place near home and is almost constant.” In September of 1900, the brothers arrived in Kitty Hawk and set up camp to begin their kite experiments.
