Zona Guan: Juxtapose
Interpreting Traditional Chinese Dance
In her thesis project for the School of Visual Arts, Zona photographed six Chinese classical dancers aged five to thirty-one, exploring how their interpretations change depending on the dancer’s age, training, and experience. I was fortunate to be Zona’s thesis advisor, and I learned as much from her as I hope she learned from me. Zona trained in dance herself, and her insights into these dancers’ both Chinese and Western cultural influences is explored in the series. Each dancer chose their lighting based on their idea of what color the Chinese dance looks like. 请欣赏 (enjoy)!
