Sonar Technician 1st Class Marie Aponte enlisted in the Navy in 1982 as a nuclear field electronics technician, using, repairing and training others on sonar equipment used to detach and chase submarines and ships. She completed her 20-year commitment and left the military in 2002 and began her transition from male to female.
