John Angerson: Sleeping Rough

Streets and alleys in Britain that are home to overnight sleepers

John Angerson spent a year interviewing the clients of hostels and homeless charities and determined a series of locations where people spend the night. In the daytime, each of these places is bustling; at night their dimly lit corners are a bed to some of Britain’s 80,000 homeless.

The sheer loneliness of these images, taken using only available light, is haunting enough without imagining having to settle there for precious sleep.
