Larry Racioppo: Coney Island Baby

Documenting the fall and rise of Coney Island’s historic amusements

Coney Island Baby is the latest book by New York born and bred photographer Larry Racioppo. Larry chronicled Coney Island’s decline in the early 1970’s in 35mm black and white photographs as fires ravaged the boardwalk and classic rides like the Tornado rollercoaster were demolished. In 1990, Larry returned to photograph the vibrant revival in color with a 120mm panoramic camera. With the help of a New York City Artist Corps grant in 2021, he focused on the old time amusements and games on Bowery Street.
