Water falls into a water treatment system in a 'trapiche' style mill, also known as 'molino chileno.' Enormous amounts of crushed stone are poured into the environment, and much of this is laced with the extremely toxic mercury in small-scale gold mining. Large-scale mining uses cyanide instead of mercury to extract the gold.
